Wheels & Forks
“Short Roadholders” were fitted to all the Dominators, including “88” and “99”, singles and SS models, Atlas and Mercury. The actual forks changed very little from the early 1950`s to the end of Featherbed production. The AMC/Norton Hybrids, the Commando, & bikes with the old single downtube frames, had longer versions of the fork stanchion, as well as some other differences, stemming from this pre-WW2 design.
It is important to remember that the Roadholder forks were widened from 1964 onwards. The centre distance was increased from 7” to 7-3/8” (just measure the centre distance of the fork top nuts, with a rule to make sure). This means that a longer front spindle has to be selected. The spindle threads were always 9/16”-20, but this changed in 1968, when the last Featherbeds were being built alongside the new Commando. As a policy change, the Commando went to the Unified thread system (UNF and UNC). The front and rear spindle threads became 9/16”-18.
